A panel conversation moderated by author, music historian, and DJ Adrian Loving, featuring legendary New York artist and filmmaker Fab 5 Freddy, and Rory Trifon, president of The Estate of Richard Bernstein, in conjunction with the exhibition "Andy Warhol’s Social Network: ‘Interview,’ Television and Portraits". In this conversation, the panel discusses Warhol’s participation in club culture beginning in the late 1970s and his representation of Black celebrities ranging from Grace Jones and Aretha Franklin to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The panel unpacks Warhol’s social ties, his engagement with Black music culture, and his interest in exclusive entertainment circles throughout the 1980s.

Join us for the opening celebration of the exhibition Andy Warhol’s Social Network featuring music collective Axel F. (DJs Adrian Loving, Jahsonic, and Smi) and music ranging from Warhol’s days at Studio 54, Area, The Palladium, Mudd Club, and the Paradise Garage. A video installation curated by Adrian Loving featuring classic images from 1980s New York club culture, clips from Warhol’s TV series Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes, and Interview magazine covers will be on view throughout the evening.

From unique fashions to genre-defining music and beyond, Detroit’s 1980s club scene made an indelible mark on American art and culture. Join historian Adrian Loving, author of Fade to Grey: Androgyny, Style & Art in 80s Dance Music, with scholar Alia Benabdellah, musical artist Kai Alce, and photographer Marie Staggat as they discuss the city’s significant role in pioneering American dance music and its impact on art, fashion, and gender. The conversation is moderated by Joël Díaz, director of the SCAD Museum of Art’s Walter O. Evans Center.
Established by SCAD in 2011, the Evans Center celebrates the imaginative breadth and expressive legacy of African American art and literature.
